PIPE PROBLEM
As much as I love technology, I really love seeing gifted kids work to physically solve problems. The Pipe Problem had you fully engaged and not staring at your screens. I have worked through several different scenarios with this. Here's the "recipe" for what you experienced.
18 PVC Pipe Pieces - I created 3 sets in different sizes (6, 12, & 18 inches)
5 Three Hole Corner Pieces = 15 holes
3 Three Hole T Pieces = 9 holes
6 Right Angle Pieces = 12 holes
The "trick" is matching the number of pipe ends (18 x 2 = 36) with an equal number of holes in the connectors (15 + 9 + 12 = 36). Based on my experiences with this project, 18 pieces of pipe really seems to work best. Few pipes is not as interesting, and more pipes is can make it easier depending on the connectors that you use. Try experimenting with a range of connectors to see what you come up with! Also, you can combine different lengths of pipes together to make it even more interesting!
