This week on Curious Quotes, Points To Ponder, & Inspiring Insights, we kick off a Week of Wonder with five new quotes and slides designed to get you and your students thinking. Today's quote is a classic point to ponder from Socrates. This slide is just about as classic as you can get. Basic black background with white text and a headshot or in this case a bust. The font is Engravers MT.
As we close out our week of GRATITUDE on Curious Quotes, Points To Ponder, & Inspiring Insights, Maya Angelou reminds us that we should be grateful for each and every new day that we see. This image comes from Pixabay and the font is the same hand drawn font Bilbo Swash Caps from the A.A. Milne quote on Monday. I am taking a week off from the quotes and slides, but will be back on December 2nd with a week of WONDER.
Let us all strive to be "charming gardeners" and fill the world with blossoming souls. Thank you to Marcel Proust for this reminder to express gratitude to those who make us happy. This free stock image comes from Pixabay. The font is Bebas Neue. By the way, Proust was a pretty interesting character who soundproofed his bedroom walls with cork to block out the deafening sounds of 1910 Paris so that he would be able to sleep all day since he was writing all night.
The week of gratitude continues on Curious Quotes, Points To Ponder, & Inspiring Insights with this quote from Rumi. I used my favorite site for free stock images, Pixabay, to locate this inspiring image. It gives the impression of a cloak without being an actual cloak. Also, the sunrise horizon offers endless possibilities of a new day. I also liked the perspective of the wall and the space that it provided to layout the quote in an atypical way.
For this simple and elegant quote from G. K. Chesterton about the critical difference between taking things for granted and taking them with gratitude, I decided to keep the slide simple and elegant. That being said, I did make some pretty important design choices that are not entirely noticeable but that do make a difference. First, notice that the opening quotation mark is hanging to the left of the text. This gives the block a cleaner line. I chose Century Schoolbook for the font to give it a classic feel. There's a lot to love about this font. Look at that lower case g. I also really like the lower case i. It has a beauty that you just do not get with a sans serif font. Speaking of serifs, take a look at how the capital W and the lower case h are playfully almost touching at the top.
Ever wonder who this G.K. Chesterton guy is? Apparently a lot of people have. Learn more about him at chesterton.org/who-is-this-guy With Thanksgiving being next week, I thought it was a great time to have a week of quotes about GRATITUDE on Curious Quotes, Points To Ponder, & Inspiring Insights. In searching for quotes on the subject, this is one that came up in nearly every collection that I read through. While I adore the illustrations of the Classic Pooh, the depictions from The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh are how I will always see the characters. I chose a hand drawn font called Bilbo Swash Caps to give the slide a more homey feel. Be like Piglet and be more grateful.
To close out this week's theme of LOST on Curious Quotes, Points To Ponder, & Inspiring Insights, is a quote for the 1951 Disney adaptation of Lewis Carroll's classic novel. I chose the Disney version because it more readily conveys the essence of the quote than the lengthier original version. I borrowed the images from the Disney Fandom Wiki. Which if you are a Disney fan and do are not familiar with this site, let's just say that it is a very deep rabbit hole that you may not emerge from for quite some time. I used the color picker in Keynote to pull the color from one of the Chesire Cat's stripes and from Alice's dress. I love this quote because it emphasizes the importance of having a destination in mind even when we are lost. Otherwise, we are sure to get somewhere, but it probably is not where we wanted to be.
